Overheard

While waiting to disembark from a recent flight from Seattle to Dallas-Ft Worth, I overheard the following conversation between a couple of fellow travellers: Lady, to neighbor: “Where y'all from?”Neighbor: “Seattle”“Oh really!?”, she exclaims suprisedly, motioning towards her husband: “We just came from there!” Here's your sign, lady.

I missed The Big One

Frequent readers will know that I am a fan of preparedness.  I have a month of food and water in the garage, chemical warmers to keep the hands and feet warm, and “some number” of firearms in the house in case someone wants to get at my hand warmers. Which is why it was somewhat ironic that when Wind Storm 2006!!!11ONE! hit a couple weeks ago, I was about 3000 miles away in Florida. Some people mark time by remembering where they were during important world events.  Kennedy assassination.  Berlin Wall.  Beetles on Ed Sullivan. Me, I mark time with music.  Pick just about any band, and I can probably tell you where I was and what I was doing when I first heard them.  Faithless?  Watching otherwise-unintelligible German MTV in a hotel room in Munich, 1998.  JJ Cale?  On my dad's shitty old cassette player in the backwoods of Idaho, 1979.  Thee Michelle Gun Elephant?  It was playing over the stereo system as I walked into a record store in Akihabara, back in 1990. ...
