BSQUARE finally gives up on Maui

This just in: BSQUARE announced today that it has discontinued manufacturing for the Power Handheld device (codename: Maui).

From the press release:

BSQUARE (Nasdaq: BSQR) announced today that it has ended the manufacturing of its Power Handheld hardware device and restructured the Power Handheld business unit. The company will continue to sell the enabling software included in the device to smart device makers as a complement to the consulting services and software that the company offers today.

As a result of this action, the majority of the Power Handheld personnel were terminated with the remainder reassigned into product development initiatives or retained to provide ongoing support for the Power Handheld device. BSQUARE will continue to provide warranty support for devices previously sold.

BSQUARE will continue to refocus its efforts solely on providing software and services to Smart Device makers, they say.

About freaking time they got back to doing what they are good at. I just wish they had come to that realization $20M ago.

Alumni Update

It's been way (way) too long since I did a BSQUARE Alumni Page update, and for this I apologize wholeheartedly. Between my recent flurry of travel, my big June deadlines, and setting aside some time for my wife, the Alumni page has languished. But I'm here to make it up to you, good readers. Bear with me here.

News:

On the weekend of July 14th, BSQUARE will be moving into new offices at 110 110th Ave NE in Bellevue. Unless their cable guys decide to dyke off the T1 lines again, that is (hey, “dyke“ is short for “diagonal cutters“, which is the tool commonly used to cut cables. Why do I always get the funny looks when I say it?). The space is looking good, for a cube farm. I like the look of the new reception area. I'm quite familiar with the space, you see, as they are moving into the building I currently work in. They'll be on the 2nd floor, and I'm up on the 7th. All my other stalker buddies are laughing at me because my target keeps following me around.

Speaking of following... Remember the phone system we had in Delphi, BioControls, and for the first year or so at Sunset? I happened to like that system (hell, I'm the one that bought it in the first place), even though it had its challenges. It was a royal pain in the ass to administer, but I always felt that was a small price to pay for the quality of the system, the expandability of the system, and the good support we got from the vendor. Well, it's coming back. Seems the Nortel system (which cost what, half a mil?) is being put out to pasture, and replaced by the exact same system (with IP telephony added) that I tearfully waved goodbye to some 4+ years ago. Irony, ain't it grand? I fought tooth and nail to keep that old Inter-Tel system in place, but I just couldn't come up with an effective argument against my boss' primary motivation for replacing it: “It makes you press 7 to delete a voicemail, and every other phone system in the world is 9”. (That's a true story, by the way). Oh, you think having to hit a 7 is bad, the voicemail system I'm currently on makes you hit “*3” (yes 2 keys!) to delete anything. God damn, I'd rather they just wrap the message around a brick and just chuck it at me.

Seems like there was something else about BSQUARE that I wanted to talk about, but now I can't remember. So make do with that. Until next time.

Pigeon Data Transfer Rates Faster Than DSL

So remember a few weeks back when I gave Bill Baxter a hard time about his glacially slow home page, and joked that I could get better throughput using pigeons?

Well, umm, turns out pigeon data rates are pretty dang impressive, and in some cases will outperform traditional ADSL service. Am I allowed a little salt or maybe some tabasco on my crow?

I humbly extend my sincere apologies to any pigeon-kind I may have offended with my previous unprovoked and wholly ignorant attack on their capabilities as a data transport infrastructure.

But Bill's web site is still slower than molasses in November. Sorry Bill. Have you tried pigeons?

BSQUARE Layoffs

Looks like BSQUARE let about another 10 people go today, mostly Maui personnel, including Employee #5. Efforts to sell the division haven't gone well, I guess.
