Italy - Pompeii

In 79 A.D. the cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii were destroyed by the sudden eruption of Mount Vesuvius. Thanks to the dense coating of ash coating the area, Pompeii is a well-preserved archeological site. While Pompeii is most famous for the disaster, it is also one of the earliest known examples of house-to-house plumbing, including flushing toilets. If you pay special attention to the pics of the roads, you can see where the wheels of wagons and chariots wore deep ruts into the ancient stone. I took these pictures during a tour of Italy and Greece in the summer of 2000.
